Hydration vs. Moisturization: What Textured Hair Truly Needs
People use “hydration” and “moisture” interchangeably, but they’re not the same.
Hydration = adding water to the hair
Hydration is about increasing the water content inside the strand and helping hair stay flexible. Hair swells when item absorbs water—meaning plump, juicy curls.
Humectants are ingredients that attract and retain water. Common examples you’ll see on our labels:
-
Glycerin (Like in our SCurl Instant Moisturizer)
-
Aloe (It’s featured in our Hydrate & Shine Sulfate-Free Shampoo)
-
Panthenol/Pro-vitamin B5 (a staple ingredient in many of our products including the SCurl No Drip Activator)
Moisturization = making hair feel soft + sealing hydration in.
Moisturizing is about improving softness, slip, and manageability, and reducing how quickly hydration escapes. This usually relies on:
-
Emollients/natural oils like Argan, Jojoba, and Castor Oil (Formulated throughout our Pink Essentials collection)
-
Sealants (Of course, our iconic Pink Lotion)
Why textured hair needs both: Curls can drink water up during wash day… and then lose it quickly if there’s nothing to help retain it. So as a reminder, hydration is hair drinking the water; moisturization is holding on to the water.
Luckily, most of our Pink Essentials and SCurl Free Flow collection products are designed around hydration and moisture maintenance.
